Invictus By William Ernest Henley (Featured Poet)

Perseus Statue Drawing by James Holko | Fine Art America

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeoning’s of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

  1. Hi. This was my grandfather’s favorite poem. I never met him but it fell out of a book my grandma discovered years later with a note on it in his handwriting expressing to her that said it was his favorite, something she had never known until after he was gone because he never gave it to her. Thanks for posting it! It’s like you conjured his ghost. I’ve been told sometimes he “shows up” like that… and well, makes his presence known. 🙂

    1. That beautiful! I also love this poem, it motivates me, “I am the captain of my soul” I believe our love ones send us subtle signs, we just have to be in tune, antennas up so to speak 😊 My grandma waves to me often but through numbers. I’m glad I was the vessel that enabled your grandfather to wave 👋

      ♥️

    1. This poem also arrested me! It’s one of the poems I read when I feel defeated! After all these years from the first time I read it, it still has the power to restore me!
